Description
This Boujad rug from Morocco’s Middle Atlas region is a vibrant narrative woven from the soul of Berber women, who infused every fibre with their stories, dreams and the essence of their world. It bears witness to a time when craftsmanship was not only a necessity but also an expression of the deepest human emotions.
At first glance, a kaleidoscope of colours unfolds, reflecting the rich palette of the Moroccan landscape: the deep red of the earth at sunset, the soft pink of blossoming almond trees, the ochre of dry fields and the subtle nuances of natural wool tones. These colours, partly derived from nature and partly accentuated by chemical dyeing (in my opinion), merge into a harmonious whole that appears both earthy and vibrant.
The patterns of this Boujad rug depart from strict symmetry and reveal a playful freedom. Geometric shapes – diamonds, squares, irregular lines – dance across the surface as if they had been spontaneously arranged by the weaver’s hand. One senses the improvisation, the joy of experimentation and the individual touch that makes each Boujad piece unique. These are symbols that speak of protection, fertility and community, but their arrangement is so personal that they seem like a secret message from the creator to the viewer.1401
